 Presidents Welcome Heather Atkinson

Welcome to the 2010 golfing year. Let’s hope that the wonderful summer weather continues for all our club days and the tournaments we are hosting in February. The February programme and upcoming events are on the tables in the clubhouse and on the notice boards.

We need volunteers to help as “spotters”, on our blind-driving holes, for the Legends Pro-Am. Anyone who is available and would like to help on Tuesday 23rd, please let us know.

We had a visit from a Rules Official, from NZ Golf – at our request – to look at our OB and hazard markings. There will be some changes, which you will all be informed about, via email, notice boards, hard copy and verbally at all club days and via the Pro Shop staff.

Congratulations to Tilly & Bill Grant who won the Anderson Trophy on Opening Day 7th February. All had a great day.

If you hear of anyone who isn’t getting our emails, but has an email address, please let us know – we need to keep these details updated.

Have fun on the course!

February Report from the CEO’s Desk

Hello everyone

Finally summer has arrived. It was starting to remind me of a typical English one!

The New Zealand Golf Open helped to bring many visiting golfers in and I would like to thank you all for the courtesy that you are showing our green fee guests. Without doubt all of the comments that I have received from visitors have been extremely positive. I have even received letters stating that playing our course was the highlight of their visit to Queenstown! We have a couple of busy months ahead of us so your continued support and a friendly Queenstown welcome would be appreciated. Please remember how important green fee revenue income is to our Club.

We have some great events planned for February, starting with the SBS Ladies Classic, the Shell Queenstown Open and the Club Car Legends Pro Am. Spaces are still available in both the Open and the Legends Competition (5 spaces left) so please support the Club and put yourself or a team into these events.

With these competitions in mind we have had Dave Mangan (New Zealand Golf Rules Official) visit the course to look at the course set up as well as our Local Rules. We have now instigated a number of changes to our course ‘out of bounds’ and ‘drop zones’. The most fundamental changes relate to the boundary to the left of the 4th hole which is now designated as ‘out of bounds’ rather than ‘lateral hazard’; the rear of the 10th green which is now ‘out of bounds’ as well as beyond the far side of the practice ground. You will also notice that the periphery of the clubhouse building and the main car park are marked as ‘out of bounds’ together with the green keeper’s compound. New drop zones to the rear of the 17th green also clearly identify which area you should use following your penalty drop. If you have any queries in relation to these new designations all members of the Players Committee will be delighted to help you.

We have recently welcomed 3 new members of staff to our Pro Shop team. We have Matthew Judd who has recently signed up to the ranks of the PGA. Matthew will be a great addition and hails from Peninsula Golf Club (and by the way he certainly hits a good ball!) he will also be helping Jamie out with lessons. Michael Copley will also be working at Kelvin Heights and Saffery Rademeyer who will be mainly based at Frankton. I will forward staff photographs under a separate e-mail so that you are able to put names to faces. Also if you would kindly introduce yourselves to our new staff members particularly when next in the shop it would really help them get to know all of you more quickly. Your support and understanding will certainly make their job both easier and more enjoyable.

The Petition to help save Frankton has now reached about 3,000 names. We really hope that every member will complete at least one sheet and return it to either of the Pro Shops in the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it is easy to get people to sign up because it is such a worthy cause!!!

We attach a Petition for you to print off… please spare ½ an hour to help.

Our new Members joined in January are Rubbicca Jung, Lisa and Grant Murphy, David Whitaker, David Buckley, Jim Burns, Hamish Humphries, Charnnarong Limlertvatee, Yuko Miyoshi, Iva Moravcova and Paul Richardson.

Enjoy your golf and please participate in the golf events that we are holding this month.

Kind Regards Michael

Ladies Golf Marie Wilkinson

Tuesday 9th is medal & putting and also the first qualifying round for the club champs. Good practice for the following week’s tournament!

Our SBS Ladies Classic is full with a waiting list – look out for the draw in the papers next week & on the ladies notice board. If you haven’t already done so, please bring your contributions for the quick-fire raffle table.

Just to remind everyone – this Tuesday 9th will be the last ladies field till Tues 2nd March (2nd Qualifying round for club champs), 15th/16th is the tournament & 23rd the course is closed for the Pro-Am.

The Pros Posting Jamie McIsaac

Welcome to the two new members of the Pro Shop staff, Michael Copley and Saffery Rademeyer. Please introduce yourself to Michael and Saff next time you are playing or practicing.

A big personal thanks to outgoing staff members Gavin Judge and Rob Ilott. Thanks for all your hard work over a busy time. I wish you the best at your new roles and hope to see you winning lots of vouchers and prizes at the various Kelvin Heights Comps and Tournaments.

The demo sessions during the NZ Open with various companies’ reps were a great success. We will be running more demo/fitting sessions in the upcoming months. The next one is the Mizuno fitting day being held on Tues Feb 16. There are only a few appointment times left so book in today.

Remember we stock a large range of demo clubs from the big brands including Ping, Mizuno, Titleist, King Cobra, TaylorMade and Callaway. There are some demo iron sets, drivers and putters available to test from the Kelvin Heights shop but the majority of demos and fitting clubs are at the Frankton Golf Centre. Book in for a free assessment of your current clubs. If you are interested in something in particular that we haven’t got in stock, we will do our best to get it in for you to try. It pays to support your shops!

It would be great to see a few more women taking advantage of the free beginner-coaching clinic held every Tuesday at 5.30pm at Frankton. Let your girlfriends know about this great opportunity and you’ll be able to enjoy their company out on the course too.

Remember to take advantage of the $2 discount on the large bucket of balls at Frankton. At the same time iron out a few of those kinks in your swing or short game by investing in a lesson or two. Playing lessons are available at both courses. Ring 442-3584 to make a booking.

QUICK TIP (CHIPPING)

*Ball back in your stance, balance forward

*Trust the loft of your selected club to get the ball airborne

*Focus on your landing zone

*Length of swing determines length of shot

SWING WITH NATURAL FORCE – EVEN AND SMOOTH

With practice you will get better!

Men’s Golf Andrew Earl

February has quickly come around and finally our summer has come.

January was a very busy month for green fee players, especially the week of the NZ Open –historically our busiest of the year.

Thank you to all our members, over this time, for their patience. I’m sure you were able to meet some interesting people playing and enjoying our lovely course.

February goes back to a rolling start from 11-00 to 12 noon via the match room, on Thursdays and Saturdays, with a 2 tee start using 1 & 9.Anyone who wants to play earlier in the competition, can book a tee time at the Pro Shop and pay their $5-00.

The Queenstown Open is on Sunday the 21st and Simon informs me that all the top players from Otago and Southland have confirmed, so the course record could be seriously under threat. All entries to Lorna in the office. Start time is 7.30 a.m.

The Legends Pro-Am is on the 23rd and spots are still available, but filling fast. It will be great to see these wonderful golfers of “yester-year” playing our course.

Congratulations to Joel Pollock for being selected to caddy for Sir Bob Charles in this event. I’m sure it will be a great experience for him. Joel also caddied for Terry Price – 2-time winner of NZ Open- at The Hills this year. Terry told me that he thoroughly enjoyed his time with Joel.

Good golfing and looking forward to seeing your smiling faces at the match room window.

Swampy and Peter.

Junior Golf Simon Boland

Junior golf is in full swing for the summer.

The first of the Junior Order of Merit events was held at the Maniototo Golf Club in January.

Ten kids made the journey up to Ranfurly to play in the tournament with all kids playing well.

Harry Kim (6) finished runner up in the under 9, nine hole field and Samson Kim (13) finished 4th in the 18 hole event. The tournament attracted over 80 kids from around the Central Otago and Dunedin area so well done to all who participated.

The next tournament in this series is at Cromwell on the 28th of February check the notice board at Frankton for entry details.

As an entree to the New Zealand Open at The Hills, Seven lucky junior golfers got the chance to line up with New Zealand’s best professional golfers in a nine-hole challenge.

Sungwoo Han, Samson Kim, Matt Jones, Joel Pollock, Takashi Goda, Jamie Anstiss and Dong Young Kim represented the club and played alongside Josh Geary, Steve Alker and Bradley Isles. I’m sure these kids are all still smiling after their experience.

Joel Pollock was awarded the men’s Most Improved Golfer for the 2009 season.

Joel has been a steady improver over the year with his handicap dropping from 26 to 11 in this period. Joel will be rewarded for his efforts when he carries the bag for Sir Bob Charles in the upcoming Legends Pro-Am at Kelvin Heights later this month. Congratulations Joel I’m sure you will enjoy that opportunity.

Junior coaching on Saturday mornings continues to grow, 9am at the Frankton Range for anyone who is new to the club.

For the older kids with handicaps, Jamie will now be holding group-coaching sessions on Tuesday afternoons at 4pm, beginning 9th of February, at the Driving Range.

And finally, a huge thank you to the Altrusa ladies for their donation of one thousand dollars to the Junior Golf Club. This money will go towards buying some sets of junior golf clubs for members to use at Frankton.

A reminder to those keen on playing in the Queenstown Open get your entries in for the grueling 36 hole championship. See you there!!

From the Superintendents' desk Ryan Irwin

At last we are having a summer. We are putting lots of water on the fairways to try to keep them as green as possible. In the coming weeks we will be topping up the bunkers with fresh sand, adding new mulch to the gardens and re-turfing some small areas on the fairways. Our focus at this time of the year is to present the course in the best possible condition.

Our Wine of January and February Hawkshead –

Hawkshead will be undertaking a wine tasting event on the Evening of 23rd of February during the draw for the Club Car Legends Competition. Please support this event, meet the Pro’s and listen to their stories.

Hawkshead is a Gibbston Valley, Central Otago estate specializing in Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris & Riesling, owned by Denis Marshall and Ulrike Kurenbach. The Vineyard is located at the 45th Latitude. It enjoys a near continental climate with warm days and cool nights, which evoke memories of Burgundy.

The grapes, on north-facing slopes, benefit from all year sunshine. A long dry autumn, accompanied by warm daytime temperatures, ensures slow ripening and intense flavour development for our high quality fruit. Our first vines were planted in 2001 and the wines are now distributed internationally. Good wine is created in the vineyard, and our unwavering focus is on quality in viticulture and winemaking to produce premium wines.

The vineyard is fully accredited under the Sustainable Wine growing New Zealand Programme, and our Pinot Noir is now grown organically. Our Cellar Door is located at The Wine House and Kitchen Restaurant opposite the AJ Hacket Kawarau Gorge Bungy Centre, State Highway 6, Gibbston.
