Newsletter July 2010
www.queenstowngolf.co.nz Presidents Welcome Heather Atkinson
Golf has taken an interesting turn; with snow staying on the course longer than many of us can remember. It is a bit of a lottery once your balls hit the fairway and many seem to simply disappear! At least we are having sunshine, unlike a lot of the Central area.
Fish and Chip Fridays are continuing to attract big crowds, from our Social Members, as well as our Golfing Members. Last week was especially popular, as Swampy managed to organise a firework’s display! He hasn’t told us what his next entertainment special will be!!
A weekly email will be sent reminding us of the competition of the day for Saturdays and Tuesdays and the week’s competition results.
If you have any requests for the newsletter, please don’t hesitate to contact us. My husband has suggested that we should include a joke or two!
July Report from the CEO’s Desk
Hopefully the snow lying on the ground should shortly melt?!? We are beginning to run out of coloured balls in the Pro Shop! Frankton course has been affected by snow a little more so than Kelvin Heights but the driving range has remained open and busy.
At Kelvin Heights the drainage work on the 4th fairway to the front of the tee has been completed and seems to be working well. In the spring we will just need to regrade the swale to the right of the fairway to catch the wet areas here. The removal of the pine trees to the right of the 4th fairway has been a great success and looks amazing. I believe that once this area is properly reinstated with the rerouted footpath, that Kelvin Heights will possess two of the best ‘back to back’ holes in New Zealand.
We will continue with our ‘Membership Initiative’ throughout July. Any existing Queenstown Golf Club Member will be given a $50 voucher (for use in the bar or the pro shop) should they sign as nominator (on the application form) a new full playing member. The current subscription rate being $350.00. So why not get your friends to join up…there’s no better time than this month!
We will continue to offer the Friday Night ‘fish and chips’ at Kelvin Heights. The Friday night meals have been extremely popular with in excess of 100 there on two recent nights and all commenting that "the blue cod is the best in town" and "great value" so organize some friends and come on over one Friday night. You can use your vouchers for meals or in the bar so please try it out!
The Sunday Roast is also a great value and a quality meal (always two choices and lovely roast veges) but we would like to see a few more utilising this day. This Sunday (the 4th) the roast will run from 12.30 to 4.30pm but on Sunday 11th we will be trying a later service from 3pm to 7.00 pm. We will also be providing a free basket of balls at Kelvin Heights range over the next 2 weeks for anyone wishing to partake in the Sunday roast and wanting to build up an appetite prior to their meal.
The US Open Golf Event was won once again by Brent Carlsson and partner Eduardo Mollinari. Brent has a 100% record in these events for 2010 and is on for the Grand Slam…. so opponents will be hoping that his links golf is not up to scratch at the British Open!

Ladies Golf Marie Wilkinson
Hello WINTER! It was great to have 21 playing on the last Tuesday of June for our 4BBB – yes, it was cold at the start but we warmed up and had a really enjoyable day. Several ladies took advantage of ordering coffees from the 8th tee – so remember that great service.
There are just 4 Tuesdays in July - the 6th & 20th are both medal days & are the 2 Eclectic rounds. We keep your cards & combine them to get your best scores for each hole – good fun! Then our last Tuesday is our Town vs. Peninsula match play competition so do come & support your side if you can.
Look forward to seeing some hardy golfers on the course throughout July!

Winter has well and truly arrived. We welcome a new sponsor in July, Aspiring Auto Court. Thank you for your support and a reminder to all our club members to support our sponsors where possible.
In July we have the Battle of the Bridge Challenge with Arrowtown. The 17th July they will come to Kelvin Heights and on 24th July we will challenge them at Arrowtown. On 24th July we require as many players as possible to play at Arrowtown. For those who are unable to play at Arrowtown you can still play at Kelvin Heights, just contact the Pro Shop to book a tee time. The Match Room will not operate on that day. I will inform members on Saturdays and Thursdays leading up to this.
The 4BBB starts on 31st July. Please put your names on the sheet outside the Match Room for entry. Please look at the dates of the rounds and make sure you are available to play on these given days, I would like to run to schedule for this competition.
Happy Golfing Everyone.
Swampy & Peter
From the Superintendents' desk Ryan Irwin
Well winter is definitely here! You would by now have seen the change to the 4th hole with the trees all gone. The Council will be putting in the new path this week.
The greenkeeping team have again been busy with landscaping around the clubhouse, mulching all the garden areas and tree pruning. This months projects are to continue the landscaping around the clubhouse, tree pruning, drainage (3rd hole).
