On the Fairways – Proud Moments for Queenstown Golf Club

It’s been a fantastic stretch for Queenstown Golf Club members, with success both at home and across the ditch. There’s plenty to celebrate.

Ruby Shines on the Australian Stage

A special mention to Ruby, our QGC Silver Club Champion, who recently travelled to Australia to compete in the Australian Junior Golf Tournament at Royal Pines.

Competing in the 11–12 age division, Ruby delivered an outstanding performance with rounds of 74 / 79 / 74, finishing 3rd overall.

That is an exceptional result at an international event and a reflection of both her talent and composure.

We are incredibly proud of you, Ruby.

New Zealand Junior Team A Clean Sweep

New Zealand’s rising golf stars have made a powerful statement on the international stage, sweeping all three trophies at the Australian Junior Interstate Teams Matches at Moonah Links.

In their first appearance in 28 years, the Kiwi team went undefeated across all seven rounds, securing the overall title, boys’ title, and, in their debut, the girls’ championship.

Of particular note was Ricky Kang, who delivered an extraordinary performance, winning all seven of his matches without a rest. In a format that tests both skill and resilience, that is a standout achievement and speaks volumes about the strength of New Zealand’s junior programme.

The team’s success highlights the depth of emerging talent in New Zealand golf and sets a strong benchmark for future international competition.

Ladies Interclub Spirit in Alexandra

Ten clubs braved testing conditions to compete in the Women’s Central Otago Interclub at Alexandra.

Now, full transparency. We didn’t trouble the leaderboard this time, finishing 9th out of 10. But that only tells part of the story.

We flew the flag proudly, embraced the conditions, and most importantly, had a ball doing it.

A special mention to Marie Wilkinson, who was one of just three players across the field to record a 2 on the day. A great effort in tough conditions.

Men’s Interclub A Tough Day at Clyde

The men’s team had what could best be described as a hard day at the office at Clyde.

Finishing 7th on the day, the result leaves us sitting 32 strokes behind overall leaders Lake Hawea, also in 7th position overall.

Plenty to play for yet, and we know this group has the ability to bounce back strongly in the rounds ahead.

Men’s Pennants

Our Senior A team delivered a strong result at home, defeating Arrowtown 3.5 to 2.5.

The win may see us climb into 2nd place, with a rampant Wanaka side currently leading this section of the pennants competition.

A great effort and momentum building nicely as the season unfolds.

Saturday Medal A Different Perspective

In a field of 56 players, only one man managed to break par nett. Josh Tierney with a 71, playing from the Yellow tees.

A cool reminder that golf is a challenge off any tee.

As Bobby Jones once said:
“In golf, the most important distance is the five inches between the ears.”

Perhaps that result also explains why so few of our men opt for the Yellow tees in our Thursday Choose Your Tees Stableford.

Queenstown Ladies Dominate at Omakau

The Omakau Women’s Tournament proved to be a standout day for Queenstown, with our players making a serious impression.

Out of 32 competitors, five were from Queenstown, and the results speak for themselves:

  • Cheli Larsen– Best Gross (78) and Best Nett (66)
  • Tyree Birch – Best Stableford and Longest Putt
  • Kelly MacKenzie – Nearest to the Pin and a raffle prize
  • Julie Grant and Sharron Payne – also took home raffle prizes

A dominant day and a great reflection of the depth of talent in our women’s ranks.

Good Luck at Ladies Nationals

Looking ahead, the Golf NZ National Teams event is being held tomorrow at Alexandra.

Our Queenstown representatives, selected from the best four LGU Medal scores (March 8 and 11), are:

  • Julie Grant
  • Rose Cross
  • Sue Cunningham
  • Jocelyn Davies

Go well team. We are all behind you. Go Queenstown.
