Saturday Showdown at the Queenstown Colosseum

Medal Day Mayhem, Matchplay Glory and One Big Swan Song

The Final Hurrah of Quinton Thompson

Let’s start where all championship stories should start — the final.

Quinton Thompson, in what can only be described as his swan song before heading off to chase the bright lights of professional golf, went out in style. He claimed the Single Knockout Cup Final, taking down Josh Rees in convincing fashion, 4 & 3 over 36 grueling holes.

If ever there was a farewell performance fit for the occasion, this was it. Solid off the tee, steady with the putter and relentless in matchplay — Quinton leaves with silverware and plenty of pride. We wish him all the very best on tour. You’ve made Queenstown proud, mate.

Spence Plate Final Result

Another gritty match unfolded with Dean Corry edging out Aaron Hotop with a nail-biting 1 up victory. This was trench warfare in golf shoes, with every hole a battle. Dean came out on top with ice in the veins when it mattered most.

Blue Tee Medal: Grown Men Humbled Again

Ah, the Blue Tee Medal. A format designed to reveal character... and occasionally crack it.

Special Prize Recap

Jack Pot was clearly lurking in the shadows again because:

  • Birdies Draw was unclaimed, meaning Jack stashed away $146

  • Net Eagles Draw also went untouched, adding another $60 to his winter fund.

He’s now two steps closer to affording a new sand wedge or maybe a house.

Nearest the Pin

  • Conor O’Boyle and Norm Dolamore were clinical with the irons, each earning a Neat Meat voucher.

Longest Putt

  • Corey Sinteur rolled one from the back of beyond to claim his own Neat Meat voucher

Random Card Draw

  • Gregory Latham drew the golden card and walked away $50 better off.

Ladies Stableford Recap

The field may have been small, but it was fierce, and surprisingly, the predicted rain never arrived. It turned out to be a crisp, calm and cracking day for winter golf.

Top Performers

  • Ann McDowell led the way with 33 points

  • Lynda Baker and Jenny Browne both returned 32 points

  • Sue Wilson was just behind on 31.

No one played to their handicap, and not a single two was recorded. A tough day out indeed.

Net Eagle

  • Julianne Bowman’s net eagle on Hole 14 was the shining light in a tricky field and netted her $11

Special Prizes

  • Judith Mitchell claimed Nearest the Pin

  • Deborah Clearwater drained a long one for Longest Putt

Final Word

The sun was shining, the blue tees were intimidating, and medal pressure was weighing heavy. Add to that two matchplay finals and a bit of club history with Quinton’s last win — this was a day that delivered on every front.

Thanks to everyone who braved the forecast and made it memorable.

We’ll see you next week for another swing at Jack Pot and maybe a couple of twos if anyone’s feeling brave.
