Sunday Stableford – A Game of Choices and Champions
It was “pick your tee colour” day at Queenstown Golf Club — a chance for every player to play the course their way. Some bravely stepped back to the blues, others strolled up to the reds, but all shared one thing in common: a love of competition and a good laugh when the breeze (and perhaps an ambitious tee choice) made things interesting.
The sun shone, the lake glistened, and by all accounts, the only thing more dazzling than the scenery was the golf — particularly from our winner, Judith Mitchell, who put on a masterclass in calm, consistent scoring.
Overall Results – Stableford Standouts
1st – Judith Mitchell (46 points)
A phenomenal performance from Judith, whose putter was red hot and whose choice of tees clearly paid off. She didn’t just win — she dominated, with a score that had the clubhouse murmuring. A well-earned $30 and a day to remember!
2nd – Craig Paterson (44 points)
Craig continues to show top form, carving his way around Kelvin Heights with poise and purpose. His 44 points would’ve taken it most weeks, but Judith’s round was untouchable today.
3rd – Jonathan Bitcheno (43 points)
Another strong round from Jonathan, whose creativity around the greens kept the momentum alive all day. His short stick was magic, and his efforts earned him not only third place but also a Longest Putt prize — a day well played!
4th – Gillian Sim (39 points)
Steady, composed, and smiling as always. Gillian’s round showed the benefits of solid course management — and a great sense of humour when the breeze played tricks.
5th – Julie Grant (39 points)
Julie’s consistent play continues, and her accuracy was rewarded once again, landing the Nearest the Pin prize on Hole 11.
6th – Anne Hailes (39 points)
Rounding out the leaderboard, Anne’s patient approach and reliable putting earned her a well-deserved finish among the top six.
Twos Club – The Sharpshooters
Precision was the order of the day for this fine group of players, who each pocketed $7 for their trouble:
-
Steven Ridley – laser-straight off the tee and a confident roll on the green.
-
Lewis Ferguson – cool, calm, dialled and chipped in.
-
Gary McVicar – a textbook swing producing textbook results.
-
Tom James – twice! Yes, Tom bagged two twos in a single round — double delight and double the cash.
That’s the kind of performance that gets you bought a beer… or at least earns a quiet nod of respect at the bar.
Special Prizes
-
Longest Putt (Men) – Jonathan Bitcheno rolled in a beauty that seemed to defy gravity before finding the cup.
-
Longest Putt (Ladies) – Judith Mitchell, as if her 46 points weren’t enough, capped off her stellar day with a curling monster across the green.
-
Nearest the Pin (Hole 11) – Julie Grant, once again showcasing that soft touch with the irons.
-
Nearest the Pin (Men) – Peter Sim, pin-high perfection and a well-earned $10 voucher to celebrate.
Hero of the Day – Matt Evans
A huge shout-out to Matt Evans, our unsung hero of the day, who leapt into action on the 15th hole to stop a runaway electric trundler from making a dramatic dive towards to 'Honey Bee' Island!
Thanks to Matt’s quick thinking (and probably faster sprinting), the trundler — and its owner’s sanity — were saved. A true act of golf course bravery that deserves more than just applause…perhaps a cold Heineken at the bar too!?
In Summary
From precision putting to trundler tackling, today had it all. The freedom to choose tees brought out everyone’s best game — and a few inventive excuses too.
Judith’s stunning 46-point round was the headline act, but the camaraderie, good humour, and those classic Queenstown views reminded us once again why this club is such a special place to play.
Until next week — keep swinging, keep smiling, and for heaven’s sake, keep an eye on your trundler!
