Queenstown Golf Club – Sunday Comp Wrap-Up
1 June 2025 – Winter's Welcome, Wicked Putts, and Wind-Free Bliss

Well, what a difference a day makes! After Saturday's gale-force winds that had more than a few players considering a late-career switch to kite surfing, Sunday ushered in the first day of winter with still skies, crisp air, and the kind of conditions that make your 7-iron feel like it’s finally behaving itself.

A cracking field took to the course for the Sunday Net Medal round, and let’s just say the greens saw more drama than a short week on Shortland Street.

Leading the charge was Julie Grant, whose putting was nothing short of legendary today. Her effort on the 18th was described by one bystander as “somewhere between heroic and ludicrous”—a curling monster of a putt, roughly the length of a small section in a Queenstown housing development (which, let’s be honest, is still not quite enough for a garage). That earned her the Longest Putt prize, a well-deserved $10 credit, and eternal bragging rights over David.

Julie also took out 1st place in the Net Medal with a tidy 69, pocketing $40. Hot on her heels was Karen Scott with a 70, and Martin Langford rounded out the top three with a 71. Judy Farquharson matched Martin's net score, showing that consistency and calm heads prevailed in the still conditions.

Other notables on the prize sheet included:

  • Marius Van Aarde and Evan Merritt both carding 72s and collecting $20 each.

  • Jeri Elliot, Lewis Donaldson, and Julianne Bowman all posted respectable 73s, collecting $15 each—because sharing is caring.

Twos were flying across the course too, with four sharp-shooters claiming the goods:

  • Lewis Donaldson (Wanaka)

  • Moonseok Kang (Millbrook)

  • Marcus Kirk (Queenstown)

  • Bryan Kane (Queenstown)

Each picked up $9 for their efforts, which should just about cover the celebratory beer they shouted themselves after.

Nearest the Pin honours went to Kay Shaw and Moonseok Kang on the 10th—precision clearly favoured the brave (and those who remembered to club down).

And what better way to roll into a public holiday than with rounds like that? With Monday off for the King’s Birthday, players could swing freely knowing a sleep-in (or another round) was on the cards. Let’s raise a glass (or a 9-iron) to long weekends, great golf, and winter arriving with a smile.

See you next Sunday—same time, less wind (hopefully). Bring your A-game and your best stories for the 19th hole!
