Matariki Day Stableford – Monday 20th June 2025
A Day of Weather, Rainbows, and Resilience
While the nation marked the Matariki public holiday with a well-earned sleep-in, twelve of our bravest and most waterproof members signed up for a competition that was less about sunshine golf and more about survival golf.
With skies that couldn't decide what they were doing—showers one moment, bursts of light the next—we even had two full rainbows make an appearance. Sadly, no pots of gold were found... unless you count the modest but well-earned prize pool won by our hardy competitors.
The Conditions
Let’s not sugar-coat it—it was wet. Constantly shifting between "gently misting" and "A Scottish Mist" the weather kept players on their toes (and sometimes in their rain pants). Sunshine? Yes, we had a whisper of it. But it didn’t hang around long.
Competition Highlights
Despite the weather and the reduced field, we had some solid scores:
-
Gillian Sim stormed to victory with a superb 43 points and collected both the Net Eagles Draw and first place prize. The only player to record net eagles on the day (two of them!), she takes home a tidy $24 plus a $12 bonus. Not a bad return for weathering the storm.
-
Dylan Street came in second with 38 points, two birdies, and a strong all-round effort. He also took out the Birdies Draw with a cheeky $12 win to go with his $18 second-place prize.
-
Judith Mitchell claimed third place with 37 points, rounding out a leaderboard that rewards consistency and plenty of towel use between shots.
Special Prizes
-
Longest Putt Winners: David Grant and Lynda Baker - proving that even soggy greens can roll your way with the right touch.
-
Nearest the Pin: Kayleigh Woodings and Tony Attenborough - showing pinpoint accuracy despite the glare off the wet tee boxes.
There were no Twos recorded (and frankly, we’re not surprised). Between the weather and the pin placements, the only twos happening were in the clubhouse with hot drinks afterward.
The Café Hit of the Day
A special shoutout to the café team for whipping up some mouth-watering lamb rolls that sold out before the last group came in. The good news? They’re planning a repeat performance for tomorrow’s Club Day. Get in early, or you’ll be left with sandwich envy.
That’s it for Matariki Monday—a small field, a soggy course, and a whole lot of heart. Well done to everyone who came out and made the best of a damp day.
Cheers from the Pro Shop Team
