Here's your Queenstown Golf Club Newsletter for Saturday 19th July, presented with a touch of The Open Championship spirit and a big nod to some truly brilliant golf—especially from one young gun lighting up the course.

Queenstown Golf Club – Saturday Showdown

A weekend of Irish Stableford, Home Pennants flair, and Open Championship vibes

The Open Is On – And So Are We

As the world watches the 153rd Open Championship unfold across the famous dunes of Royal Portrush, we celebrated our own version of glory here at Queenstown. While there might not have been grandstands or TV towers, the tension on our tees and the celebration at the 19th were just as electric.

Junior Glory – Billy Groves Steals the Show

Take a bow, Billy Groves. Our junior member stepped up and put on a masterclass, with a jaw-dropping 107 points in the Men’s Irish Stableford, recording one of his personal bests and claiming victory by a landslide.

Billy showed the poise, power, and precision of a seasoned pro. Watch this space, folks—our very own rising star is just getting started.

Men’s Results – 153rd Irish Stableford

“Luck of the Irish” or just good golf? You decide.

The men’s field was deep, and despite Billy’s runaway victory, the rest of the leaderboard had a good go:

Top Scores:

  • Billy Groves – 107 points (junior & champion extraordinaire)

  • Dean Corry – 87 points – rock-solid as always

  • Michael Wong – 82 points – consistent and clutch

Strong scores continued down the board with:

  • James Sowerby 81 pts

  • Doug McGregor 79 pts

  • Ethan Lunn and Mike Clement both on 77 pts

  • Josh Rees, Ian Browne at 75 pts

A full field of players in the 70s made for tight margins, good banter, and some interesting countbacks.

Special Mentions:

  • Nearest the Pin:

    • James Sowerby and Homy Yang stuck it tight to claim the Neat Meat vouchers.

  • Longest Putt:

    • Neil Watson rolled in a green monster to earn his Neat Meat nod.

  • Birdies Draw:

    • Jaydee Oh, James Sowerby, and Michael Wong all walked off with $23 apiece for going red.

  • Net Eagles:

    • Jack Pot collected cleanly – $133 dropped into one lucky winner’s pocket!

  • Two's Jackpot Glory:

    • Richard Hogan made a solo two on Hole 14 and took the entire pot – $69 credit all to himself. No sharing, no splitting. Just pure class.

  • Random Card Draw:

    • Matt Evans snagged a crisp $100 credit – proving once again that you don’t always have to play well to walk away with a win.

Ladies Results – 3rd Home Pennants Stableford

Strong scoring, smooth putting, and a touch of finesse

While the men were wrestling with Irish Stableford chaos, the ladies were putting on a clinical display of steady scoring and short-game brilliance in their Stableford competition.

Top Scores:

  • Carolyn McIsaac – 37 points – in rhythm and in control

  • Jeri Elliot & Kate Webster – both posted classy 36s

  • Julie Grant – 34 points – a tidy score on a wintery sunny day

The leaderboard showed how even the field was, with just a few swings separating the podium from the pack.

Special Mentions:

  • Nearest the Pin:

    • Jeri Elliot – sharp and straight when it counted.

  • Longest Putt:

    • Jeri Elliot again! A clean sweep of the prizes, with a clutch roll on the green.

  • Birdie Draw:

    • Ruby Lee was the lone birdie queen, taking home $17 for her effort.

  • Net Eagles Draw:

    • Jeri Elliot again made the most of her round, picking up $17 for her net eagle – a day to remember!

  • Twos Winners:

    • Jeri Elliot and Ruby Lee split the pot for their precision on the par 3s.

A round like that earns more than prizes – it earns bragging rights until at least Tuesday.

Final Thoughts – A Champion’s Weekend

Between a junior triumph, sharp shooting, and some serious putts dropping across both fields, it was a memorable day at Queenstown. And as The Open Championship reminds us of golf’s great traditions, we’re reminded how lucky we are to have rising stars, close contests, and top-tier camaraderie right here at home.

See you all for the next round—where putts are holed, champions are made. Keep swinging well, smiling wide, and backing yourself – even on Hole 14.

Cheers,
Your Queenstown Golf Shop Team – fuelling champions, young guns, and your next great round since forever.
